Visuelle Kommunikation

"Historically, in the field of graphic design, large industrial, commercial, or institutional clients have provided not only financial support to designers (in the form of commissions), but have also had an impact on design choices, and contributed to shaping the image that graphic designers have of themselves as professionals. Despite this, clients are often forgotten protagonists in the history of graphic design. Recent critical debate has more often focused on the changing role of graphic designers and their direct relationship with end users. The issue of clients and patrons has remained largely in the shadows, although clients continue to play key roles in the process of design and production of communicative artifacts."

“Let me state this for the record: The internet is not dead. Digital will not disappear. Print will not kill the web. It’s easy to forget that when physical books were invented, news websites ignored them, and then laughed at them as a niche pursuit for geeks."

"Now here we are and the same journalists are declaring the death of Internet, as the hype and excitement surrounding print and paper travels inexorably around the world. News companies have even rushed into creating news-papers, long before any clear business model has emerged to pay for them. We are in a print world now.”

Founded by Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden in 2007 as a design and research studio, Metahaven has come to define a new methodology in graphic design. The studio’s speculative practice privileges the vocabulary of graphic design as a means of knowledge production, using it as a tool to analyze organizational models and power structures. Investigating political and economic design—including nation branding and logo production—in relation to statehood, currency and information networks, Metahaven places particular emphasis on transparency and visibility.
