Case studies and prototypes for Gendered Design in STEAM
in Low and Middle-Income Countries

Carleton University in Canada is launching a call for expressions of interest on Gendered Design in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). This call is part of an explorative research program and is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC, Canada).

The definition of Gendered Design used by this call is the practice of reflecting upon and incorporating gendered considerations when designing technology-based solutions, applications, methods or processes. Gendered considerations especially pertain to women, who are too often underrepresented and/or overlooked in technical and design fields. It is intended that such an approach will lead to and promote new or improved services, products, processes and systems designed using gender analysis, generating substantial benefits for society and advancing gender equality.

Individuals and institutions are invited to submit expressions of interest in one of the two following streams:
• Stream 1: “Case Studies” - 15 to 20 grants between $10,000 and $15,000 CAD each;
• Stream 2: “Case Study + Prototype” - 10 grants of a maximum of $35,000 CAD each.

Submission deadline: September 27, 2019

Submission Deadline: 1 November 2019

The use of Computational Intelligence for the development of artistic systems is a recent, exciting and significant area of research. There is a growing interest in the application of these techniques in fields such as: visual art and music generation, analysis, and interpretation; sound synthesis; architecture; video; poetry; design; and other creative tasks.

The main goal of evoMUSART is to bring together researchers who are using Computational Intelligence techniques for artistic tasks, providing the opportunity to promote, present and discuss ongoing work in the area.

Topics of Interest
Submissions should concern the use of Computational Intelligence techniques (e.g. Evolutionary Computation, Artificial Life, Machine Learning, Swarm Intelligence) in the generation, analysis and interpretation of art, music, design, architecture and other artistic fields. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Systems that create drawings, images, animations, sculptures, poetry, text, designs, webpages, buildings, etc.;
Systems that create musical pieces, sounds, instruments, voices, sound effects, sound analysis, etc.;
Systems that create artefacts such as game content, architecture, furniture, based on aesthetic and functional criteria;

RGD’s International Journal of Graphic Design Pedagogy and Practice is a platform for discourse on the role of design education and design educators in the 21st century. The journal explores aspects of teaching and learning in a visual communication design context, including: curriculum development, design research, critical pedagogy, strategies, and methodologies. The journal welcomes submissions from educators, practitioners, and students that include case studies, pilot and research projects, and literature reviews.

Design has tremendous power to engage with global, social, economic, cultural and environmental challenges. It is useful for design educators to reflect on where design has been and to think about where it will go in order to understand how design pedagogy can prepare students to be agents of and for change.

What considerations and issues must educators address in order to best prepare the next generation of designers? By examining the evolving contexts and practices of design around the world, the journal seeks areas of opportunity in which design curricula and the industry can evolve.

Deadline for submissions: 9 November 2019
Publication date: DesignThinkers 2020 (October 24-25)

Design Lab #4
Design for collaborative cities by DESIS Network*
Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseum
– 21.07.2019
